Solar is a home decision and a contract decision. Before comparing the sales pitch, find out who owns the equipment and what obligations would follow you into a sale.
Put these questions on one page: Is the system purchased, financed, leased, or covered by a power purchase agreement? What payments remain? Can they increase? What does the contract require when the home is sold? Who handles roof work, panel removal, repairs, and warranties?
The CPUC’s consumer guide explains the different ownership arrangements and the potential complications of transferring a lease or agreement. Ask the provider for answers tied to your actual documents.
If a move is on your horizon, bring the solar paperwork into the conversation early. I can help coordinate the real estate questions with the provider and your title and escrow team. Your tax adviser should confirm any tax treatment for your circumstances.
