Before choosing finishes, picture an ordinary day while the work is happening. Where will you cook, work, sleep, and keep pets away from the work area? Which rooms and entrances will remain usable?
Write down your priorities, your spending limit, and the decisions you still need to make. Agree on how you will receive progress updates and how unexpected work will be discussed.
The Contractors State License Board’s homeowner checklist is a helpful starting point: check the contractor’s license, speak with references, and understand the written scope, materials, schedule, permits, and payment arrangements. Keep changes in writing.
